When Wayne Jr. was four years old he had Rheumatic Fever and was confined to bed for several months. Dr Blender said Wayne Jr's heart was damaged extensively and he needed to be in a very quiet atmosphere so his heart could heal. With April and Jim and newborn Susan; home was not at all a quiet place for such a sick little boy. So plans were made for him to stay with grandparents. It was hard to do this, but we visited with him often.

His first few months were spent with his Guffy grandparents and then he went to stay with his Caywood grandparents for another few months. Grandpa and Grandma Caywood bought a little red wagon especially for him to be pulled around so he did not overtax himself. Grandma Caywood thought he needed to get out in the sunlight to put some color back in his cheeks. Wayne Jr. missed his parents and siblings, but was resigned to the fact he could not be with them until he was well.

Wayne Jr. loved to "read" and got many books from well-wishers. Grandma Caywood could read a comic book or story book with more emphasis than anyone I have ever known. Wayne Jr. had a favorite book that he liked for her to read to him. She read it to him over and over daily. One day, she was not really wanting to read this book again, so she started turning the pages several at a time. Wayne Jr. was a bit puzzled at first about what was going on, then he said "no gramma, you turned too many pages". He turned the pages back to the ones she missed. He also knew that book forward and backwards. His favorite book was Reddy Fox and his favorite comics were Uncle Scrooge and other Walt Disney comics that grandma Caywood bought for him.

Wayne Jr. came back home after nine months of being with grandparents. He brought several of his books home with him, but the majority of them stayed with grandma so she could read them to him when he visited. A special bond was formed with both of his grandmothers until the day they passed away. He still loves to read today, but nothing could ever equal or replace Grandma Caywood doing the reading for him.
