Each Easter, when our girls were young, I made all of four of them dresses alike, but in 1965 I spotted some nautical designed dresses at J.C. Penney’s. I thought they were absolutely beautiful and there were the exact sizes to fit all four of the girls. I hesitated just a few minutes, then splurged and purchased all four of them. They were not at all expensive or I would not have even considered buying them. I felt guilty for spending the money when I could have made some for less, but liked them so much. The dresses had white pleated skirts with blue sleeveless bodices accented with red ribbon belts and white edging on the open arm holes. I bought the usual accessories that I bought each year to go with their new attire. I bought gloves and Easter hats not shown in this picture.

When we entered the church that year on Easter Morning, all eyes were on the four girls. I did notice a look of disappointment on some of the faces of the church members, yet the girls looked so cute all dressed alike. When church was over, Maggie Smith came over to me and said she was really disappointed in me. Maggie was a lady who expressed exactly how she felt good or bad as she saw it. I was not angry, but a bit hurt, then she added "Each Easter Sunday all of us can hardly wait for you to come to church so we can see the beautiful dresses you have made for the girls and this year you bought them!" That was her way of complimenting me and yet having her say. I still think the dresses were beautiful.

I never realized how deeply the girls appreciated my efforts of making them nice clothes and especially their Easter dresses until they were grown. Karen even wrote a poem about her favorite Easter dress. Created, Cut and Sewn by Mama with love”

A proud Mama remembering with a tear in her eye...
