One of my favorite pieces of jewelry is a ring that cost only a dollar. Our grandson, Daniel, bought my ring from a coin-operated dispenser at Wal-Mart when he was eleven years old. It was a red “ruby” set in an expandable “gold” mounting. He was beaming with pride when he approached me a day or so later. He said “Grandma I bought something for you” and presented me with this beautiful inexpensive ring. It fit my pinkie finger perfectly. I got many compliments from people. It did look like an expensive ring. I had worn it for almost a year when the set came loose and fell out. I could not bear to throw the precious ring away, so I put the empty band in a drawer and explained to Daniel what had happened to it. I had hoped I might find the stone or perhaps find another stone to replace it.

A short time later, Daniel approached me again with another ring exactly like the first one he had given me. He could not have been any more excited if he had given me a very costly ring, nor could I have been more pleased. Daniel is such a thoughtful grandson and I am proud of the fact he always tries to please others. The sentiment he displayed with this gift was worth as much to me as any piece of jewelry I have ever received. When I am through wearing this ring, I will put it in a keepsake box for Daniel so he can remember our special bond when he is grown.
