One day when Wayne JR. and Jimmy were in their early teens, they found a pack of cigarettes while walking down the road. Both came to me wide eyed and so excited about the prize they found. They kept talking about people smoking at length, while fingering the opened package. I could easily read their thoughts and knew exactly what they were thinking.
I stopped what I was doing and said "would you like to try one?" Both boys were astounded at my statement. They knew my views on smoking. I also understood how they felt. When I was their age I had always wondered what it was like to smoke a cigarette too. They stammered around a bit looking at each other and me as well and finally said "yeahhh."
So I lit up a cigarette, both boys were very uneasy at first, but took puffs on it and so did I, most likely my first drag. Both of them expressed how nasty it tasted and wondered why anyone would ever want to smoke after trying a cigarette. Years later, when Jimmy was an adult, he expressed to someone while in my presence, that one of the reasons why he never took up smoking was attributed to that incidence. No fun, if mom let them do their first smoke.
