One day, back in 1949, I had a doctor’s appointment and needed a dress with buttons in the front that were suitable for a nursing baby. I was nursing Wayne Jr at the time. I only had a few nice dresses with buttoned fronts. That was back when everyone wore dresses for such occasions. I had some skirts and blouses, but I did not have a blouse large enough to fit my larger bust size. I finally chose a crepe dress that had small round pearl buttons from the neck down to my lower waist.
I sat in the very busy and crowded doctor's waiting room for a long time. Wayne Jr was about 9 months old and sitting in my lap. We were both becoming somewhat impatient. Unexpectedly, Wayne Jr twisted around and grabbed my dress front to pull him up to a standing position. As he did, he popped open every single button completely down to my waist. I sat there exposing my bra and some skin while the men and women patients had a front row seat to view my unexpected skin flick. Of course, since I was a nursing mama, I exposed a lot of skin.
There was nothing I could do, but try to hide my frontal exposure behind Wayne Jr while holding him with one hand and discretely buttoning my dress with the other. Some of the patients snickered and some showed the same emotions of shock that I felt. I was so embarrassed; I could have crawled under the chair. I am sure the men had a most enjoyable free peek show! Perhaps, it might have even perked the ill ones up a little bit.
