One winter day in 1949, when Wayne Jr was about 16 months old, we awakened to a blanket of beautiful snow. Wayne Jr was too young to remember seeing snow the year before and was quite excited about seeing the white stuff on the ground. I gave him his morning bath and as usual let him play for a while in his diaper. I went to the kitchen and was busy making breakfast when our neighbor, Joe Holderby, drove in to talk to Wayne about some farm related matter. Joe was grinning from ear to ear and asked me if I knew our little boy was out in the in yard playing in the snow.

I was really surprised because I did not hear Wayne Jr go out the door. I ran to the kitchen door to look outside and there stood Wayne Jr stark naked, out in the yard playing in the snow. I was very embarrassed and hastily ran out red faced to retrieve our bare son.

Less than a week had passed and on another early morning, Joe came back to talk to Wayne again. Again, I was in the kitchen busily making breakfast. Joe was laughing harder this time and told me our son was out in the yard again. Wayne Jr had slipped out again and was playing in the snow that remained on the ground from the week before.

If I was embarrassed the first time Joe saw Wayne Jr out in the snow naked, I was all but devastated the second time. I have often wondered if Joe thought Wayne Jr ran naked all of the time. Joe mentioned this story to me many years later and was still laughing as he repeated it.
