When Owen was about 3 years old, we took April to New Mexico to visit her boy friend and future husband, Burton Freeman. Burton and three other college students lived in an apartment in Las Cruses where they all attended college. Owen always traveled with us everywhere we went, so he made this trip with us.

Burton was the type who liked to tease me and especially liked to shock me. I noticed a big stack of Playboy magazines on the floor by a chair. He saw me glance over at them and picked one up and asked me what Owen would say if he saw a center fold. I was game and told him to go ahead and show him one and see what he would say for himself He opened the magazine to the centerfold page and showed Owen, after first having to get Owen’s attention away from a toy he was playing with. Burt said “Owen what is this”? Owen glanced up as I held my breath, he took a fleeting glance at the picture and calmly replied “Oh that’s just a tiger” Burton and I just stared at each other, puzzled at what Owen said.

Burton took another look at the centerfold and started laughing. Then he turned the centerfold toward me and pointed to the nude lady lying on a tiger rug with the head attached to one end. Burt’s joke backfired big time, but not until we all had a big laugh and Owen went back to playing with his toy undisturbed.
