I spent much of three months researching our large local cemetery for a county cemetery book publication. I decided to do it alone for several reasons. One reason was, no one seemed to want the job and by me doing it alone, I knew it would be done right. I started the project in the late summer of 1990 when I could only work from early morning to noon, go home make lunch and return later in the day when it was not so hot. I was asked to record everything that was etched on the monuments from the front to the back.

I worked 10 hours straight through on more than one occasion. When I first started canvassing the cemetery, it was so hot my body literally steamed. I was completely drenched with perspiration which made the gnats and flies swarm about my face. I also encountered mosquitoes, ants, bees, snakes and other pests as well.

One early morning, a beautiful and almost friendly owl greeted me when I arrived at the cemetery. He hopped along with me just barely out of range as I moved along recording the information on the many monuments. He appeared to be curious as to why I was there and seemingly enjoyed my company as much as I enjoyed his. It was great to have his silent company, as the work was somewhat tedious and boring at times. He got braver each day and would hop on a monument just out of my reach as he peered at me with those beautiful big brown eyes. He sat patiently with his body stilled as he moved only his head as he watched every move I made. He remained with me for many days following his first day with me. I so enjoyed his company and greeted him with a few words each day when I first arrived. He almost seemed to understand.

When winter set in, I went to the cemetery less often. One day, when I went to the cemetery, my owl friend was not there. He disappeared just as quickly as he had appeared that summer. I really missed him and have often wondered where he went or what ever became of him. I finished my recording in early December, but will never forget my old friend... the Owl.
