My 6th grade teacher at Gore Consolidated #1 in 1942-1943 was Miss Leona Bolon. She was a very attractive young teacher that we all liked. WW II was in full swing at this time.

I will never forget the day her soldier boyfriend just showed up one mid afternoon while class was in session. He was a very handsome young man dressed in his military uniform which really impressed all of us. Miss Bolon was so embarrassed when he kept disrupting the class with his funny antics. She got so flustered she could barely teach. We were not giving her any slack either because we were enjoying him as much as he was enjoying seeing her squirm. He really gave her a hard time and I am sure we were a captive audience as well. She kept gently trying to get him to leave and finally he did. His untimely visit really put some zip in our day.

A funny thing happened the next morning when class opened. One of the geography maps on rollers was hanging down directly behind the teacher’s desk. The maps hung over the top of large blackboard. Miss Bolon walked into the classroom and immediately walked over to put the map back up. As soon as the map rolled up, there in full view was a hand drawn chalk picture captioned "Kilroy was here" on the black board. We kids all roared with laughter. Miss Bolon seemed a bit upset, but I really wonder if it was because she had to suppress her laughter and still act dignified. Since the soldier did not draw the picture while we were in class, we know he had to have come back later.

Shame on Miss Bolon!
