In 1987, Kathy and Denny lived in Omaha, Nebraska and decided to visit us before Katie was to be born in mid December. Several of our family members decided to go to Alva to eat supper while they were here. Wayne only drove my car on occasions such as that, so when we decided to stop at Wal-mart after we ate, he left my key in the ignition thinking he had his spare in his pocket. He locked the car door and we shopped for a while. When we returned, Wayne asked for my keys after he found he did not put his in his pocket when he changed clothes. We had no keys with us at all except for those in the ignition! Our car had the "no theft" door locks.

Someone went inside to get a clothes hanger to try the doors anyway. I told Wayne we should call the police, for help, but he was too vain and kept trying to unlock the door his way. We attracted much attention and got a lot of advice, but still nothing worked. Finally, after more time went by, I decided to call the police to help us anyway. They told me they would be right there.

By the time the police had gotten there, a young neighbor of ours came by and said he thought he could get the door opened. He worked the wire into the back window and finally snagged the lock and viola as the police drove in, he had the door open. They said they had a brand new device to unlock such doors and wanted to try it, so we gave the go ahead. Kathy was very far into her pregnancy with Katie and the long wait had tired her, so she sat down in the front seat to rest while the two policemen practiced opening the door. The rest of our family remained outside watching.

Many people came out of the store and some stopped for a few moments to watch the police work. It had not dawned on me why the intense looks were on some faces until a lady walked up to me and whispered. "What is the matter, won't she open the door?" Then, I realized most of the onlookers thought Kathy had locked us out or herself in.
