Lucy was the runt of three pygmy goats. She was around two feet high. Her mama had three kids and left her to die. Wayne found her about frozen when he went to feed cattle one morning. He came back to the house and announced the birth. He said he was sure one of the three would die as she was so small and almost lifeless. Ashley went to the barn to look at the new triplets and found Lucy almost frozen to death, She was about the size of a half grown cat. Ashley carried the pitiful little creature back to the house.

Ashley was such an animal lover and sat on the floor with Lucy cradled in her arms as huge tears welled up in her eyes. She looked at me with such a pitiful and helpless pleading look. I told her I was sure she would not live. I did not know then, that goat was going to live if only to torment this old lady. I advised Ashley that she should get a warm towel and rub her down by the heat vent. After about 30 minutes or so of rubbing her down, Lucy began showing signs of life. Then, I wondered what I had created with an orphan goat to raise. We searched the toy box for doll bottles to feed her, they did not work, then we tried baby bottles, they did not work either. Finally, I located a preemie baby bottle with a soft nipple that worked for her.

We kept Lucy in a big box and fed her every three hours. In a couple of days, she was prancing around like a…. well… a goat!!! She was hopping out of her box leaving her calling cards wherever she went. We had just gotten a new deep freeze, so I made her a home in the box it came in. We cut a flap door for her to be fed through. It was not long before she jumped out into the room. I taped the feeding door shut and cut a hole just large enough to hold her bottle. She could slurp a bottle of milk down in the wink of an eye as she wagged her little tail as fast as she could. Lucy was such an adorable little baby and we all loved her.

As soon as the weather got warm enough for her to survive outside, out she went out, but that little head of hers could stick in the door each time it opened and she would worm her way inside. I do not think she met much resistance though. Lucy literally ruined over $2000. worth of my trees, shrubs and flowers. Not mentioning anything about the finish on my car. Wayne found all of this funny. She could have easily caused a divorce. I about clapped my hands one time when she butted him hard… right where goats are supposed to butt people. Wayne was actually humiliated. I still snicker over that one.

Lucy had no idea she was a goat. She follows the dogs. She laid under the implements like a dog when Wayne worked on them. She even cried when he left in the pickup and followed him to the end of the driveway. I was ready to trade her for a dog.

Lucy got into some feed, foundered and died a few years ago. As much as I hated the things she did, I actually cried with others over her death. Lucy is the topic of many conversations even today.
