Kathlyn Lois Guffy's mama, Ann, passed away when Kathlyn was a week old. Ann was a real "cut up" with a keen sense of humor. She joked with everyone in the family and was so much fun to be around. A few days after Kathlyn was born, Ann came home from the hospital. For a day or so she was having severe pain, so Kent admitted her to the hospital. She was diagnosed with the flesh eating disease. Within a day after her diagnosis, she had surgery to remove the dead tissue. The surgery was to no avail and Ann passed away on August 2, 2001. Everyone was devastated.

A very solemn service was held in Ann's memory for her family and friends at Ft. Hood at El Paso, TX. Kent insisted that Kathlyn be at the services. She slept through most of the service. There were close to 500 soldiers and friends attending. This service did bring some closure to our loss, but another family service back here in Oklahoma was yet to be endured. We were all seated on the front pew rows of the Driftwood Christian church with Ann’s mother and Kathy taking turns holding squirming little Kathlyn Lois. Her squirms were accompanied by some quiet little grunting sounds. The minister, a great friend of both Kent and Ann, had also performed their marriage ceremony in the same church a few years before. He spoke for a while and then said “If Ann was here today, she would say…..” At that very moment, Kathlyn Lois squirmed again and tooted so loudly it was heard over most of the church. My thoughts ran as to how Ann would have loved that funny happening and laughed with us.

I stifled my laughter until Ann’s mother could not contain herself and started chuckling. I had tears running down my cheeks as I was literally racked with muffled laughter, while hoping people would not notice. Several people in back of us could be heard chuckling too. The minister could not have timed the words any more perfectly for Kathlyn’s "answer" for her mama.
