~”FROM A POP BOTTLE TO A MUSTANG”~

One summer, When Jimmy was about 14 years old; he walked a two mile stretch of road almost daily between Byron and Amorita to collect pop bottles. The pop bottles were from people who threw them out the car window thinking there were not worth enough to save for the mere two cents they brought in return. His dream was to have enough money saved up to buy a brand new car by the time he reached sixteen years old.

Jimmy was always our more thrifty child and could see ahead. He had the patience of saving his money and building his collection into a large sum. When some of the neighbors learned what he was doing, they gave him their empty bottles. The expression on Jimmy’s face when he found or received a bottle was like a child who found a coin.

Through his patience, he got enough money to buy a little piglet. He raised it, and sold it a few months later. From his profit, he bought 3 more baby pigs, raised and sold them and bought a calf and raised and sold it and bought three calves. He repeated the procedure until he had enough to fully pay for a new car.

He found a new 1967 red Ford Mustang GT Coupe that he really liked just a few months before he turned 16. He paid for it in full from the profits from his two years of savings. I do not know of even one kid who has done that. Of course, dad helped him with the feed from the farm.
