Back in 1958, my parents, Orville and Banna Caywood, lived on a farm 17 or so miles away from our house. I took our children there to visit each Sunday. There was a small country grocery store called Wide-Awake or commonly known as Frank Smith’s Store between our house and mama and daddy’s house. The store carried items that the kids liked to snack on. For a weekly treat, I let the children pick what snack they wanted. For some reason, this one particular Sunday did not go as smoothly for us as usual. I decided to give some money to the two older children and let them buy the goodies, while I sat in the car with the baby. Seemingly, one wanted something that was over the budget and the children made several trips between the store and my car for advice. While sitting there, I observed a lady sitting in a car close to mine watching us closely. It was obvious that she was wondering what was going on.

When the seven children finally got back to the car and were loading up, the lady rolled down her window and with a very thick Texas accent drawled "Ma'am, are all of those children yours, or are you all going on a Sunday School Picnic?" Without one moment’s hesitation, I replied "Yes ma'am, they are all mine, and it is certainly no picnic."

End of story… nooooo......... A couple of weeks later, I visited my sister, Lila at her mobile home in Cherokee. Lila was absolutely "gushing" about the sweet new lady who moved next door. She wanted me to go with her to the lady’s trailer home to meet her. Of course, I was interested in meeting anyone who made Lila this excited, so we walked over to her trailer and Lila knocked on her door. When the lady opened it, the lady and I both gasped. She was the Texas lady I met at the country store. She and her husband had just moved to Cherokee from Texas. She yelled for her husband who was in the back room to come see the lady with all of the kids that she had told him about…… Small world!
