Our daughter, Susan, who was just a little mite of a girl, was chosen from the first grade to be the little angel fairy in the Christmas program. She was so excited to have been chosen for the part. She was looking forward to wearing the white satin dress I had made for April for a part in a program two years before.

The dress was a bit too large and the part called for a short dress, so I resized the dress and cut off part of the long skirt. She truly looked like an angel with her huge brown eyes and dark hair. I bought a new pair of patent leather shoes to complete her costume.

Susan's big night finally came. We sat near the front of the stage for a better view. Susan made her entry where she was supposed to skip onto the stage and shake her sparkling angel dust from a wand upon the heads of her fellow performers. When she made her grand entry, she took a few skips and suddenly slipped and fell completely down to the floor landing hard on her bottom. Several people in the audience gasped and I am sure as hard as she fell, it had to have hurt. I do not remember anyone laughing as it was so painful as well as embarrassing for her. From her facial expression I could tell she was devastated. She sat on the floor a few moments, then turned and looked straight at me with eyes welled with tears for a few more seconds, then she stood up and carefully finished her act.

I am not sure who hurt more, Susan, or I. What had happened to cause her to fall, was the custodian had waxed the floor just prior to the program and her new shoes did not help with traction either.

She truly was our little Our Fallen Angel!

An added note from Susan: I wondered if anyone remembered that incident. I also had to have help learning how to skip for that, because when they asked me if I knew how to skip, I said “no”. I remembered having to be shown how to skip and I had to practice the skipping part at school. When I fell, I still can remember the big "KABOOM" as the stage underneath was empty of chairs and it really echoed!! (Susan)
