Grandma Caywood had six boys before she finally had the girl she hoped for, so the boys had to help grandma with the household tasks. Uncle Lloyd, who was the eldest son, washed the dishes while my dad, Orville and his brother Jesse, who was just a couple of years older than daddy dried them.
Daddy said they always squabbled about which one did the most work. To solve the problem, they decided to divide each piece of table service equally. As they sorted the items they would say "here's a fork for you and here's one for me" they did the same with the dishes and glasses before they dried them too.
This labored idea stopped them from fussing, but it was certainly not the simplest or quickest way of doing dishes. Daddy said they never once thought about how much more complicated it was to do dishes that way. Grandma Emma finally caught on to their act and put a “damper” on it.
Daddy also told a funny story about his brother Charley. Charley was just younger than daddy. He was very small and did not know what many of the food items were called, so one day when he came to the table, he sat down, canvassed the table for a few seconds and loudly chirped "Pass'em!"
