It bothers me that our grandchildren have not had the chance to enjoy the simple and fruitful things in life that we Caywood kids did while growing up. I do my best to keep those memories alive and hopefully instilled in the grandchildren that live about me. Our children played much like we did when they were young. I think a story Kristen's wrote about what she remembers as a child while visiting Grandpa Wayne and Grandma Lois Guffy's Farm, indicates the fact that I achieved at least a small iota of that goal.

I was one that listened intently when my elders spoke of their childhood. I just wish I had written their stories down or not have forgotten so much, as well as to have asked more questions. What I once thought was not such an exciting lifestyle, is now one of the sweetest memories that I have today. I am glad I did not have the toys nor the clothes the "richer" kids had. I would not have the wonderful memories now of the "make do" glass bottle people and animals, dirt castles, mud pies, wooden block cars, self made Sears Roebuck catalog paper dolls, dressing our defenseless kitty cat babies, homemade flour sack dresses and the list could go on forever.

Do you ever see a child roll a tire down a hill anymore, play marbles, make a playhouse, shinny up a tree, build a race car, walk to town or to the neighbors, climb a windmill? These are just a few of the many things we did for entertainment when I was growing up.

Our form of entertainment when I was growing up in the 1940 and 50’s was inexpensive. We cultivated our imaginations much more than our children and grandchildren do now. We would not have dreamed of asking for an expensive toy.

I do not ever remember saying "I am bored" I am sure mama and daddy could have found something to have made us fill that void! What a change we have today, what will tomorrow bring?

Ah such sweet memories!
