Back in the 1940’s and 50’s, mama's brother, Howard Clover lived near Kaw City in Kay County, OK. Kaw City was named for the Kanza Indians, called the Kaw by locals. He was a farm hand for a Kaw City farmer. When he worked in the fields, he unearthed many Indian arrowheads. Uncle Howard gave Wayne Jr several arrowheads from his large collection. He found many during the years he worked there and gave many away.
There was an Indian burial ground close to Kaw City where the graves were on top of the ground with a circle of rocks marking the graves. I think the Indians were buried on top in an upright position. I am not certain at this time. One time, Uncle Howard took a man that was interested in Indian culture to this burial ground. After they had been there a while, they got close to one of the graves, when all of a sudden a clamor broke out and a loud rattling sound came from within the grave. The man was so startled he jumped and darted off, almost scared out of his wits.
Uncle Howard, who was not so spoofed, went over to the rock grave to investigate what caused the sounds that were coming from there. When he looked inside, he was startled to find a great big opossum staring back at him. Only then, could he and his friend laugh about the situation.
