Willis, Lila and I attended a little one room country school in Grant Co, OK back in the late 30's. Our school, Mt View District 61, presented a school play each year at Christmas time. When I was in the first grade, the school play was based on poetry for all eight classes. The first grade consisted of only four girls. Our class was to reenact "Little Bo Peep." One of the older students in another grade was to represent Little Bo Peep and we four girls were the sheep. We were to crawl onto the stage on all fours while the poem was being repeated. We were supposed to crawl a short way, stop and put our hand to our eyes as if looking for our mistress and crawl on. Our teacher came up with the idea that a good way for us to wag our tails was if we placed our thumb on our tailbone and wagged our fingers.
The night of the program, all of our families and neighbors came to watch us perform. We four little girls were very excited about making our first big debut on stage. As we entered the stage from behind the curtain sheets, we vigorously wagged our "tails." The crowd roared with laughter. I had a bit of difficulty "wagging my tail" while crawling on my three remaining "feet."
The more the crowd laughed the harder we wagged our tails. We thought we were really doing something cute, not once realizing why the audience was laughing so hard. I was surely proud of our showmanship until I got into the car to go home and heard my mother tell my dad "I can not believe that teacher was so dumb." Mama was just less than appalled. Daddy stifled a snicker. My brother Willis explained all of this to me later.
