In 1964, Wayne and I went to Kansas City, MO with a Co Op Tour group. It was a three day tour with two busses full of Co Op members. We spent the first two days viewing a Co-Op paint factory and other farm related things. The third day, we were given one free half day to do what ever we wanted to do. So we decided to set off on foot to look around. We came upon this huge Woolworth store and decided to check it out.
Wayne asked me if I wanted a coke and of course, I did. He said "I saw a place to get a coke by the door where we came in." So we went back to the soda fountain to order a couple of colas. I noticed the black lady was a bit disturbed by her seemingly lack of willingness to wait on us, but I assumed it was just her way.
We crawled up on the tall stools and drank our cokes while several of the black customers stared at us. Again, I was disturbed at what I thought was their lack of tact. We finished our drinks and continued looking around. After some time, we decided to go on down the street. When we got ready to exit on the other side of the building we came upon another fountain with a sign that read "Whites only." Only then, did we realize why the black people were staring at us. We had invaded their territory.
