Willis was the typical older brother who loved to heckle his little sister and I was the typical little sister who did not take teasing well. Willis did pester me a lot when we were growing up, and I was the perfect target because I "squalled" at anything he could think of to tease me about. He used to climb up to the highest cottonwood tree limb and "sing" a little ditty over and over "Lois Loves Billy, Lois Loves Billy." Billy Thomas was certainly not my “Charming Billy.” He was not so smart and a nerdy kid. He was in the class above me when we attended Mt. View, our little one room country school. I thought I was literally disgraced by being teased about him.
I also squalled when Willis crawled up on that same limb and heckled me with his taunting chant "Locus, Pocus, Docus and on down the alphabet." Mama would tell me "just get away from him," but would I do that? No….. I just gave him more pleasure by standing under the tree squalling. Even with all of the teasing and heckling, I loved my brother dearly. Soon after he turned 16 years old, he joined the US Navy during WWII and our days of heckling and squalling were over. I would have given anything to have him sitting on that tree limb again teasing me, instead of having thoughts that I might never see him again.
