When Lila and I were young girls, daddy added bedrooms onto the north side of our house. He had the outside framework done and left the interior to be finished the next summer. So our bedroom was a bit drafty at times that winter. Mama insisted that Lila sleep with me because she worried about her getting cold. Of course, we had many blankets to keep us warm, but Lila was a snuggler and crowded me all night long. I was one that did not like to be touched at all when I slept, so when she got close to me, I moved away. I fell out of bed a few times which upset me even more. I shoved her back, but within minutes she was wedged against my back. I continually fussed with mama about what was happening, but mama just scoffed at me about my situation. I think I detected a little smile from her too.
One day, I decided to take action myself, I was going to put an end to my night time discomfort. I sneaked a long board into the house and placed it smack dab in the middle of our bed lengthwise. It took some ingenuity to get it to stay upright. It kept falling flat down on the bed. Lila was not bothered in the least by my crude divider. She just slept right on top of the board. After a couple of nights of that, I wired the board to the head and footboard. At last, I got my first comfortable night's sleep! All went well for me for the next few days. One day, I did not cover the board with blankets and mama caught me. She was very upset with me and gave me a good verbal dressing down. All of this time, Lila stood back grinning from ear to ear at my dilemma, knowing full well she had her body heater back.
Now, I was back to square one, but after that, I was a lot more verbal and forceful with making her move over. Summertime ended my woes of "bed warming" duties and none too soon for me. Hmmm… Now that I think back, I wonder if she did not “rat” on me.
