When my sister, Lila, and I were young, daddy used to fill the cow tank with water in the cool of the late evenings. After the tank was filled, he sat with us on a corral fence that he had made from pipe. He pointed out the Big and Little Dipper, Milky Way, named the main stars and told us of his thoughts of the universe. At this time, my brother Willis was in the navy during WWII, so he missed out on these evening conversations. I am sure he had many star gazing events while out on the Pacific Ocean. I so enjoyed these special times with our daddy.

Many years later and after I married, I became interested in our family genealogy. I came in contact with some of our Kansas Caywood relatives. One of them sent me a copy of a story written by one of my great grandfather's granddaughter telling about the life of my daddy's grandfather, Mason Caywood of Raymond, Kansas. My Great Grandfather Mason had the same interest in the universe as our daddy and also pointed out those same stars and the Milky Way to his granddaughters and perhaps to his sons too. It was under almost the same circumstances as what daddy did when telling us of his thoughts.

I wonder how far back the Caywood family went with an interest in the universe. Some of our children and grandchildren show the same interest today.
