My Aunt, Calantha Caywood, made this exact dress for me in 1947. Aunt Calantha was married to daddy's brother, Walter D. Caywood of Tucson, AZ. She and Uncle Walter and sons, Walter Eugene and James “Loren” came to visit us that spring. Uncle Walter came back to Oklahoma every seven years to visit Grandpa and Grandma Caywood at their home south west of Sand Creek, but this time he brought his family with him. They stayed at our home, which was just a mile away. Grandma Caywood died in 1948.

Aunt Calantha told me she would make a dress for me from a pattern I had chosen if I could get the material to do it. Mama had just enough feed sack material to make it. It was yellow cotton. Aunt Calantha cut the pattern out right away. She began sewing it together by hand. Mama offered her the use of her old treadle sewing machine, but she declined and sewed it all by hand. It took her just over two days to complete the sewing. Never before nor after have I ever had a dress sewed together with just a needle and thread. The dress fit like a glove. It became a favorite of mine and I wore it until it was worn out. Mama worried a lot about hosting Aunt Calantha as she was a city lady and we were 100% country people. It was the only time I had ever met her.
