Aunt Calantha told me she would make a dress for me from a pattern I had chosen if I could get the material to do it. Mama had just enough feed sack material to make it. It was yellow cotton. Aunt Calantha cut the pattern out right away. She began sewing it together by hand. Mama offered her the use of her old treadle sewing machine, but she declined and sewed it all by hand. It took her just over two days to complete the sewing. Never before nor after have I ever had a dress sewed together with just a needle and thread. The dress fit like a glove. It became a favorite of mine and I wore it until it was worn out. Mama worried a lot about hosting Aunt Calantha as she was a city lady and we were 100% country people. It was the only time I had ever met her. Pattern #4586: Note My bust size was larger and the waist and hips smaller.
