One summer day in 1933, when I was two years old, my mother made a new dress for me. I was dressed only in my panties for her to fit the dress without having to undress me repeatedly. Between fittings, I somehow managed to slip away from her attention while she was engrossed in her sewing and wandered a few yards down the road to our neighbor's home.

Mrs. Johanning was a sweet and dear old Catholic lady. She was a deeply religious lady who adored little children. Some where along the short journey to her house, I had taken off my panties. Mrs. Johanning was sitting in her rocker and just happened to glance out of her window where she saw me standing totally naked in her flower garden. I was admiring her many beautiful flowers. Grandma Johanning quickly went out and brought me into the house. She wrapped a dish towel around me and called my mama. She told mama her first thought was that God had sent down a little angel for her.

Some thirteen years later I dated her grandson, Kenneth. He thought the story was hilarious and teased me a lot about it during the two years I dated him. I think that was the only time anyone ever called me an angel.
