My father in law, James L. Guffy had a keen sense of humor that not just everyone knew about. I was one who liked to listen to his tales of the old days.

One day while we were alone, we were talking about modes of transportation in the horse and buggy days. The conversation shifted to dating in a horse and buggy. He said he also did that before he got a car. He even named one lady that he dated a few times that I knew, but I never knew that he went out with her.

He said at times when the guy needed to relieve himself, he got out of the buggy with the pretense of tightening the straps or other adjustments of the harness. As they did this, they used the horse's leg to soften the sound of what they were doing. Perhaps the lady waiting in the buggy was fooled by this maneuver, or was she?

I also wonder how she coped when it was a problem with her. I would almost wager that Dad Guffy had a few harnesses to tighten too.
