At one of my basketball games in 1945, my sis Lila, started talking to a bunch of guys who came from a neighboring school to scope out some of our Gore girls basketball team. Lila was not shy like her sister Lois. She spotted Bill, the best looking guy of the group and when the guys were asking for all our names, she pointed me out as her sister. He was very interested and asked her to set him up with meeting him after we had played our game.

After our game was over, Lila came to our locker room to tell me about her "friend" who wanted to meet me. I was a bit annoyed that she went so far, but after she ushered me to where he sat and a few wolf whistles from the rest of his friends, I decided she had done her work well. He was what we called a hunk, indeed. I sat down in front of him with Lila and we chatted a while with my sister egging us on. About that time, some of my teammates spotted the group and almost flogged the guys, I just got up and walked away thinking it was a lost cause. The girls flirted shamelessly with the guys to the point I thought they looked just less than aggressive hookers. Lila stood her ground and guarded her/my "man" that she had chosen for me. I sat on the other side of the Gym with my best friend. It was not long until she came to where I was sitting and told me Bill wanted her to ask me if I would consider dating him. I sent word back that I would consider it. He approached me later and asked for a date later in the week. I accepted.

At school the next morning, two of the most aggressive of the girls asked me what I did to get him to ask me instead of them. They both said they flirted with him to no avail so they had to take his left over friends. I was honest when I told them I did nothing except to talk to him to get his attention, but by me walking away, I am sure that made me more enticing. One must remember back then our suits did not cover as much as girls ball suits do now, so he got a good look as to what I was made of ;-)

I dated Bill a few times and went back to an old boyfriend. I felt badly when someone told me that "I broke his heart"
