This picture of me was taken in 1947 in my Grandpa Caywood’s flower garden. It was just east of the Caywood home which is barely visible in the background. Grandpa asked my dad to take a picture of his beautiful flowers. Dad did not want to take a picture of it without a person in the picture, so I was the chosen one. I am so glad I did as this is one of my two favorite pictures.

Grandpa Caywood had a flower garden every year that was watered by a water channel he devised that flowed from a spring house east of their home. It was piped from a spring that was housed in a small rock house on the side of a hill a few yards west of their house. Grandpa also had a large bed of Gladiolas south east of the house. There were several Lilac trees to the south west of the house. A Redbud tree was just southeast of the house and at an earlier time there was a small cement goldfish pond in a rock garden by the Redbud tree. Grandma Caywood loved flowers and had many until ill health stopped most of her activities. She died on Dec 21, 1948 after being bedfast for ten years.

Grandpa added new bulbs and plants each year. I well remember him discussing the many types of flowers with mama that he had and ones he wanted to try growing. He ordered his seeds by mail from the many seed catalogs he received. He made small ground path where one could walk between the flowers and not step on them and easier to hoe the weeds. Tending his flowers helped him pass ten years of loneliness away after Grandma Emma passed away. Grandpa Caywood passed away on November 26, 1958. Almost ten years after grandma. Grandpa truly had a “green thumb”
