My dad was a great artist and often “doodled” on scraps of paper or anything else at hand. One time, he drew a picture of a very ugly old man on a block of cattle salt at a feed store in Wakita. He did so while waiting for mama to purchase chicken feed.

Mama never walked into any store and just purchased anything. She had to “reason” which was the best buy for their hard earned money. Daddy was a very laid back person and was used to her weighing every aspect of any purchase she made. This time, he whiled away the time with his artistry.

The block of white salt with his pencil drawn comic picture sat there for well over a year before someone bought it without the knowledge of the owner. The owner said everyone who came in for a block of salt and saw the drawing wanted it. The store owner was very upset as it was quite a conversation piece. I am sure an unwary cow quickly licked the masterpiece art to oblivion.
