During WWII, anything made of rubber was rationed because of the need for rubber for military purposes during the war. Daddy made home made rubber tires by taking treads off of several bad tires and bolting them to the wheel. They were smaller than the original tires, but they got us places we needed to go. The homemade tire made the car ride rough, but we never had to worry about a flat on them. The tires Daddy made reminded me of the Do-Nut tires that our new cars come with today.

Daddy patched (vulcanized) the punctured tubes so many times they looked like a patch work quilt. One garage owner told someone who thought they needed tire rationing stamps for new tires that he did not know what needing tires was all about until he had a look at what Orville Caywood had done instead of getting new tires. Daddy was not a whiner and did what was needed to compensate for things that he could not afford or buy.
