The pictures above looks almost identical to the school desks we had in our little country school in Grant Co Oklahoma. The recitation bench looked just like the picture on the right. The desks to our far left were the smaller desks for the youngest of the eight grades in the one room class room. There were windows on both the north and south sides of the buildings. We also had two small Cloak rooms to the east. The blackboard encircled the west side of the room with a four foot extension on the north wall which we faced.

The teacher’s desk sat upon a foot tall podium across the west side. Most of the time the teacher’s desk sat in the center with the recitation bench to one side. Each teacher seemed to have a different idea of where they wanted the furniture. Above the blackboard was the Alphabet in Capital and small letters as well as the numbers. In the middle of the wall above that was a picture of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. There were several pull down roller maps on the north 4 foot wall above the blackboard extension. On the opposite side there used to be a door. It was sealed shut and pull down roller maps with beginner words for the younger students were placed over it. The upright piano sat in that corner too.

To the far back East wall on the north side of the entry was a huge coal/wood stove with a metal barrel like protective cover. Behind that, was a stand with a water bucket and dipper. A cabinet for our lunch pail/buckets and extra books was just to the south of the entry. It also had a trap door to the storage box underneath. It was not used while I went to school.

One of the cloak rooms was used for coats and the other had a home made framed sand box. It was about a three foot square and was about table height and painted green. The dust mop, brooms and wood floor sweep were kept there too. The floor sweep was red and had enough oil in it to pick up the dust and dirt on the floor.

The school closed at the end of my fourth grade in the spring of 1940. We attended Gore Con #1 in Grant Co. after that.
