Our mother, Banna Clover Caywood used a large one and ½ coffee cup for her coffee drinking. She would place it in a saucer then pour hot coffee into the cup until it was brim full before adding cream which made it spill over into the saucer. Never once did it not overflow. She would sip it at first and when she got to the last drop, she set her cup aside and sipped the remaining coffee direct from the saucer. We kids could never understand why she did this. After asking her a few times with no real answer, we just let it go.

Mama drank coffee for each meal from when she was a young girl until up until she died at age 91.

When we were young, she first used a percolator that brewed the coffee in the container over a hot stove. Later, she started using what was called a Drip-O-Later. It was a three section aluminum pot. The middle section had small drain holes in the bottom. That section held the fresh ground coffee. The top section is where you poured the boiling hot water into the pot which also had holes in the bottom. A lid was used to help keep the water hot. The hot water then seeped through the grounds and drained into the bottom serving pot. The two top sections were then removed and the lid placed on the serving pot ready for use.

Mama liked her coffee medium strong and her sister Myrtle made coffee so strong it would almost be bitter.
