When I was about 5 years old, I was out in our yard chopping dirt with a garden hoe that had a short broken handle. I was barefooted as we kids always were during the summer. Mama snapped “Lois, put that hoe down now, or you are going to chop one of your toes in two!” I teasingly sassed her back "well, you are going to chop your old toe in two." About that time, I took a big chop with the hoe and it came down on my toe just as she predicted. It almost split my second toe on my left foot in half. I tried hard to suppress how badly the pain was, because she was so right and I did not obey her warning.

Mama grabbed the wash pan, took me by my hand and griped me out as she led me to the kerosene barrel. She turned on the spigot and filled the pan with kerosene. Then, she told me to place my foot in the wash pan full of the nasty smelling stuff. I had to soak my sore toe every day for days. I never went to a doctor. It took my wound a very long time to heal. We did not realize until much later that I had also broken my toe. Mama taped two of my toes together so it would not hurt so badly. This chopping incident left me with a large nail and a tiny one on the same toe and a tale to tell!
