Wayne and I started dating four times a week after our first date on Sept 16, 1947. We became close very quickly. Both of us were worried that the other was concerned about the differences of our ages. On our second date, Wayne brought up the subject as to whether I thought he was too old for me. I laughed and said I was worried that he thought I was too young for him. We decided neither of us cared what age the other was. I really was an old soon to be seventeen year old and Wayne was a young soon to be twenty five year old

We spent hours talking and soon got to know each other well. We parked in my parents yard and they were lenient about what time I had to come into the house, so we had plenty of time to talk. Wayne and I came from non-expressive parents, with the exception of my daddy. Daddy had no problems expressing his feelings. Most of Wayne and my love for each other was not discussed, but we knew how the other felt. Even today, we still do not openly express our feelings, but we still know how each of us feels about the other.

On Oct 2nd, we went to a movie at Kiowa Kansas. On the way home, as we rounded the correction line curve, something was mentioned in a song being played on the car radio about someone being after another's heart. Wayne gave me a hug and caught me off guard when he said "I’m after your heart too" He did not have to say more as I knew that was his way of proposing to me. As corny as it might sound to some, I replied that I was after his heart too.

On our next date, he told me he had ordered my wedding ring set from the Sears and Roebuck catalog the very next day. We had four more dates before the rings arrived exactly a week later by parcel post. Wayne said the mail carrier, Gene Case, had a big grin on his face when he delivered the rings to him special delivery. We were engaged the next night on Saturday October 11, 1947, the day before Wayne's father’s birthday.
