Mama set a date for Wayne to come see me on Saturday September 16, 1947, because I was not home when he came the Sunday before to ask me out. The 16th also happened to be the annual "Old Settlers Day" at Wakita and I never missed a chance to go. I was very upset with mama for taking it for granted I would date Wayne, but she convinced me that I should not break the date she had made with him.

Saturday came and I got ready for my date with Wayne. Willis was leaving for Wakita and I told mama if Wayne did not get there on time, I was leaving with Willis. Wayne and Clifford had problems with something and did not get there at the designated time, so with Willis telling me he wanted to leave right then and for me to make up my mind what I was going to do, I chose the certain way of getting there. I told mama if Wayne came, and he still cared to see me, that he could look me up at the movie. Three guys asked me for a date that night and one of those, I really wanted to date. I told them to see me later and if this "guy" did not show up I would reconsider.

Wayne and Clifford did catch up with us at the movie where my twin cousins and Lila and I were. Can you believe he picked me out of the crowd not knowing me at all! I moved to the seat behind Lila and my cousins and finished watching the movie. While the rest walked around town, Wayne and I visited each other in the car. He was a real gentleman and very easy to talk to. I liked him right away. Lila went home with Willis and Clifford went to my home with us. We three visited in the car for a while after we got home. Clifford either fell asleep or pretended to be and Wayne walked me to the door, where we stood at the steps and talked more.

A funny thing happened that first date, I knew Wayne had been married and was a bit unsure of things, so when he took a step forward I took one back. Then I took notice that we were about 10 or more feet from the step where we first stood. We both edged our way back. I thought he was not even going to try for a goodnight kiss and was somewhat hurt, When all of a sudden, he asked me if he could kiss me goodnight. I replied that he could. He gave me such a quick peck on the lips that I was a bit startled, but was at ease that there was not anything wrong with me. He then asked me if he could come back to see me again and I told him I had hoped he would ask.

Clifford came with Wayne several times on our dates and slept in the back seat most of the time. Not many dates later, Wayne came alone. From then on, we dated four times a week; every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for two months, then married on November 22, 1947. Now, here we are many years later on the same farm we moved to in November of 1947.

It was all my mama's fault. I always teased her about it. Mama and Wayne were always very fond of each other….. Mama was right, I did feel much better about things after meeting Wayne.
