One summer evening when Wayne Jr was about five years old, I was sitting in my recliner trying to relax after a hard day of housework. It was early in the evening and really too early for supper, but Wayne Jr was hungry and said "Mama, why don't you make supper?" I teasingly chided back "Well, why don't you just make our supper?" He gave me a long puzzled look and left the room. I supposed he had given up about eating at that early time.
After a while, I heard him opening cabinet doors and drawers in the kitchen, but assumed he was looking for a snack. He soon returned and stood at the doorway with a somewhat pitiful look on his face. He said "Mama, I can't make supper." I tried to hide my amusement and chirped "Well, just why not?" He looked at me quizzically for a few moments then replied "Because I can't find the can opener."
If he had not been so serious with his statement, I could have found it very funny. Instead of laughing, I felt badly about the situation. I immediately got right up from my comfortable chair and made something for him to eat. I have often thought about this happening when I am searching my drawer for my hand held can opener. Wayne Jr became a very good cook after he left home and without using the can opener!
